2005 R1200RT stumbling between 4,600 & 5,000 RPM

Postby bdimon » Wed Jan 04, 2017 12:45 pm

It seems I always have an issue after riding in heavy rain. I rode to work and back in yesterday's soaking rain. This morning I noticed the power dropping out between 4,600 & 5,000 RPM. I first noticed it under hard acceleration in second gear. After passing 4,600 RPM, the power dropped out and the bike stumbled until the revs rose past 5,000 RPM. It also did it in third and fourth gears under gentle acceleration.

Above 5,000 & below 4,600 RPM, everything is good. The problem is trouble in that narrow RPM range. Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad/shorting main stick coil. Check the connectors on both and assemble with dielectric grease to keep the moisture out.

I'll do that. I replaced one stick coil two months ago. I'm due for maintenance that includes replacing the spark plugs so it will be convenient to do that then. Thanks Jim!

It dried out enough that I did not experience it this morning. It's definitely moisture - related.
