GSWC brake pads, sticker shock!

Postby eap » Tue Dec 22, 2015 8:57 pm

Just checked the micro fiche at two BMW dealers for brake pads. They want ~$118 for a single rear set and the same amount for a 2 pair set of front pads. (I was spoiled by my R1150GS which cost wayyyyyy less). Then I checked Beemer Boneyard and they have Carbone Lorraine sintered complete front and rear for around $110 (still the 1150 was wayyyyy less and I was able to do the work).

What gives?
First why would BMW OEM rear pads be twice the price of front pads?
Second is there some quality difference between the BMW and Carbone Lorraine?

The GS is closing in on 20k miles on the speedo, and this will be my first break from dealer service. I'm not the best wrench and while dealer service has always been good I need to save $ for ride trips and think I can handle brake pads...

The BBY pads are cheaper and last longer, plus are not as hard on the rotors.

The BMW ones cost more because they are BMW, and the rears wear out 3 times as fast as the fronts. More money.

I ran Carbone Lorraine pads on my Triumph Tiger 1050 and was happy with them. You also might look into EBC replacement pads. Either would be good for me.
I suspect that the BMW pads are sourced from Brembo, and BMW inflates that price.

I was going to recommend EBC as well. I've used EBC pads on all my bikes.
