Bent front wheel. Do disc bolts need to be heated?

Postby kioolt » Tue May 13, 2014 9:48 pm

I hit a huge pot hole today and it bent my front wheel. It hit so hard that the front fender went up into the bottom of the nose fairing hard enough to make the paint crinkle off. My right mirror also fell off, which broke my multivex mirror. My question here is it necessary to heat the disc bolts to remove them? I bought a wheel on ebay that will come without discs so I will need to remove the ones from my old wheel. Can the bolts be reused? What should they be torqued to?

You can reuse the bolts, but IIRC they're spec'd as single use. The last set I pulled out I put right back in, but if I'd had a fresh set of bolts, I'd have used them. The ones on my bike had thread lock on them, so a little heat would have made it a lot easier to get them out.

There is a used front wheel for an R1100RT on ebay right now, it appears undamaged, and comes WITH the front rotors and a tire mounted on it for $285 plus $30 for shipping. It certainly couldn't hurt to have some spare front rotors... they cost mucho bucks too. Heck, the tire doesn't look too bad either!

No affiliation with the seller... just saw it there:

I believe I would buy that one if I had an R1100RT but I've got an R1150RT. I do have a spare rear wheel which I got with a tire and disc on ebay. I don't remember what I paid put I do remember that I thought it was a great price.

The bolts are in with Loctite, so heating them is a good idea. If this is a long-term replacement, I'd take Wes's advice and buy new ones. When Pam's front wheel was damaged on the way to Cape Fear (R1150R Rockster), the local shop re-used the bolts on the used wheel we were able to get quickly. I bought new bolts to go with the new wheel that the insurance company bought.

I've filed an insurance claim on this and I will be going to Trans Am Cycle tomorrow to get an insurance estimate. If the tech there thinks that I should replace the bolts he will most likely put it on the estimate. I'll mention it to him to make sure he gives it some thought. Bob's where I usually do business cannot get me an appointment until the 30th. Trans Am told me that since it didn't need to go the rack for inspection I could show up without an appointment.

Do make sure they take a look at your suspension, especially the ball joint between the paralever and the fork crossmember as well as the paralever itself and maybe the strut mounts. You're describing things' going past their limits rather than just bottoming out, though maybe you're attributing all the secondary damage to the tire's being so out of round it hit bits it shouldn't have.

Scary. & glad you're OK after that!

I'll be taking the bike apart tomorrow or Saturday for a clutch job. I'll check the suspension while I have all of the bodywork off.

After reading all of the comments, I'm a little concerned regarding why you didn't see the hole in enough time to avoid it? Obviously, I'm glad you're OK, but it sounds like you did significant damage, and maybe more than you think you did! :(
