I need help with a clutch change

Postby kioolt » Fri May 09, 2014 10:54 pm

Is there anyone willing to help me change the clutch on my 04R1150RT? It has 145k on it now and it has never been changed. The clutch lever has very little play in it so I thought I had better change it before I take any long trips. I don't need complete help from start to finish. I am just wanting help after I get the transmission removed. The last clutch I changed was over 20 years ago on an airhead. I don't have the bike apart yet but I would like to know if that when I do I can get some help for the actually clutch change. I know there is a tech day this month but I am reluctant to take my bike that far apart away from home. I have a abundant amount of tools here and I could never remember what I might need if I tried to do it somewhere else.

How soon are you planning to do it? My schedule is pretty crazy right now, but I'm glad to help if I can. Do you have the tools (30mm socket, 12mm allen) needed to get the swingarm off and back on?

I have all the tools needed to do a spline lube which I have done twice. I'm only asking for help after I get the transmission removed. I will even put everything back together after the clutch is installed. If you have the time or want to help more that is fine also. I've never replaced the clutch or seen it done on an oilhead so I would like to have some help with that part. I'm unsure of what parts I should have on hand either. What would you suggest for parts? I'm not in a hurry to get the clutch changed but I could do it in the next two weeks if you would be available during that time period. If that is not possible then probably around mid June to the end of June. I will be down in Alabama around the end of May until sometime the beginning of June. I have a second home near Birmingham and I will be down there for the BMWRA rally. I have a bike at that home so I won't be riding the RT. After I get back here I would like to have the clutch renewed before I go to the national in MN. If you are going to the RA rally and need a place to stay I have two extra bedrooms but only one of the extras is furnished.

Sorry to be tardy - this working out of town but waiting on relocation stinks. :(

I've got to work on daughter's car this weekend, next weekend we're hosting the Tech Day. So I may just be offering moral support via the web.

Most dealers recommend replacing the whole clutch pack - friction plate, pressure plate, and cover. I did that when I had the original transmission in my R1100RS out to be rebuilt at 40k miles, and there was plenty of friction material left when I had to retire the bike 75K+ later. If you're not looking for that much life, replacing just the friction plate should be ok.

I'm not sure when I will be doing this job. I have looked at the Clymer manual and watched a couple of Youtube videos. I believe that I can do it by myself. On my last ride on the bike I bent a front wheel. At this moment I am trying to get that taken care of. It's such a hassle to get an estimate for insurance on a bike compared to a care.

Are you suppose to use loctite on the clutch pack bolts?

I got the clutch pack installed today and the transmission back on. Now I'm waiting on a slave cylinder to arrive. I hope that's all I need to get this job completed. Bob's didn't have one when I went to get my clutch disc. I wasn't sure I needed one but I thought I would get one just in case. It turns out that I do need one. There was gunk all over the end of the slave cylinder. Prior to changing the friction disc I had very little free play in the clutch lever. Just about as soon as the lever left the grip the clutch was engaged. The fluid in the reservoir was dark gray in color and had a strange odor. I've seen in some other post and in a Youtube video that that is an indication the the bearing in the slave cylinder has gone bad and the color is from the grease in the slave cylinder.
