Anybody done a Canisterectomy on an R12GS?

Postby Mikepotter86 » Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:27 pm

Perhaps due to my history of riding old bikes that don't play will with fuel pump auto-shutoffs, I watch carefully, and fill my tank to the very top. This is difficult on the GS, with a smaller filler cap, and I've had a little bit of over-spray a number of times. This doesn't bother me, but it apparently does bother the evaporative emissions system, causing the bike to run rich and struggle for the first few minutes after a refill.

I've read a bit about the "Canisterectomy" in which you remove the US only Charcoal canister, eliminating this problem. Does anyone here have any experience with it? If so, any recommendations on resources, supplies, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike - I'm surprised no one has responded yet. I'll wager more than half of the 12GS of your vintage are canister free. However, you don't want any tech advice from me (trust me on that), but I can bump your request.

If you go to the GS Spot on the ADV forum - you'll find all the needed info.

Yup, ADV is the best resource for that.

Here's a good link, too: http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/ccremoval.html

I've heard folks far wiser than I say leave the charcoal can on until it's a problem - I forget the reasoning behind that, but that's what "they" say :)

I removed mine using the link posted by Wes above. Super easy. And converted the canister into a hookah

Me too (The canister, not the hooka). Axed the canister from both the GS and the RT.

Piece o' cake.

(Of course you have to be careful, not overfill and then go have lunch, causing a small hazardous material incident like I did on the way to RA last year.)
