disassembling R1150 motor

Postby grownup » Wed Feb 05, 2014 11:26 am

Hi,

I am still tinkering with my R1150RTP. I am trying to remove the left cylinder head from the bike. But, I am stuck.

Does anyone know the secret to removing the cam chain sprocket ?

When I attempt to turn my cam chain sprocket, it just spins and causes the valves to go up and down.

So far, I have removed the following:
1. tupperwear
2. gas tank
3. left throttle body
4. left valve cover and plastic
5. cam chain cover
6. 4 main screwes to cylinder head and two tiny screws near bottom.
7. plastic alternator belt cover
Todo: a) remove cam chain tentioner ( need 17mm wrench)
b) remove cam chain sprocket from left cylinder so I can put the head off and inspect it.

Go to youtube and do a search on "bmw service - r1150 engine disassembly". There may be a related video that covers what you need.

Send me your email. I have a large pdf file on the RTP maintenance that covers motor disassembly.

thanks for the PDF. Since my cam shaft sprocket spins freely for about 1/4 turn, I am thinking my cam sprocket on the inner shaft attached to the fly wheel is gone or fubar. It also appears my R1150 RTP ate the cam chain tentioner. I only found half of it. Does anyone have a cam shaft sprocket removal tool I can borrow ? Normally, you can lock the fly wheel with the break or some type of device and remove the cam shaft sproket. However, when things are not right you can't do that. So, it looks like I need a tool that looks like this which is for a Porche boxer cam shaft sprocket.

The sproket has 4 wholes on it and has 35 on the outside. So, I am guessing this is a 35 mm sprocket.

One like this may work also.

You need to lock the flywheel. Roll the engine to TDC compression on the side you want to remove. On the left side of the engine, just above the starter, you will see a hole. It is in line with a notch in the air box. This is where the TDC pin goes in. I use a bent #2 screwdriver, but the factory tool will work too. Careful not to jerk the bolt free, that can damage other parts.
You say it ate the tensioner. Did it smash up the plastic chain rail? If so a new motor (or good used) is the best option. If the sprocket and chain are spinning independent of the cam that is not good for anything.

I had to find TDC by feel. I had to use an old Harley T-shirt I had from 20 years ago to jam the cam sprocket. It looks like my cam chain popped off the cam shaft after it tore up the plastic chain stay. There are plastic pieces all over.
Here are some pics. Does anyone want to buy an old R1150 RTP ?

The internet sucks. Why me.

They say it is a rare thing for a cam chain tentioner to fail. I think this is what happened to me. The result is the chain cam ate my chain stay. It is considered a castrophic failure since the cost of fixing it is normally higher than just replacing the motor. Anyone have a used R1150 motor laying around ?

That sucks, man. George (posted above) might be able to help you find an engine, and there's always Beemer Boneyard.
