Seat issue.

Postby Adventurer » Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:20 pm

OK. Been getting in some longer rides in preparation to riding out to BMWMOA rally. Now the GS came with a Sargent seat and has seem OK until now. With recent rides of 6 hrs. +, could use some relief you know where!! I noticed post for WTB, with regards to Airhawk cushions, in that some of the members are looking to get their hands on one. Not knowing about this product...is it reasonable expect improved "comfort"? Really don't want to go big $$$ for Russell DL.

I've used one for something near 7-8 years on a couple different bikes. The Airhawk is as good as any other reasonably inexpensive fix. Scott

I like the beadrider. It made a two-day ride to Cheyenne, Wyoming bearable with a stock R1200RT seat.

Me too -- I used a naked BeadRider in summer and topped it with an Alaska Leather sheepskin in cool/cold until I got a Russell seat. I love the Russell.

FWIW, I've been using the beaded seat covers (and now the Beadrider brand ones we sell) for twenty years and well over 250,000 miles. Makes all the difference to me. They can take a little getting used to, but give them a shot.

I tried the Airhhawk and it came right back off the bike because it made me feel like I was not the bike and slid around to much. Then I tried the beads - bought the ceramic ones thinking they'd last longer - wrong answer - those puppies get HOT in the sun and release that heat when you start riding. The beads work great, but I would buy the wooden ones as they don't heat up.
I went from stock seat to a Sargeant and been quite happy. Haven't had to bead or anything.
I've heard the Alaska Sheep Skin is the best most comfortable. As I'm a GS rider, I like to go off road a lot, and these accessories are not good off road. Maybe at the rally, I'll buy the Alaska thing for the 10hr road trip home.

If you don't, I have one you can have when you get back. IMO they don't work any better than the beads. The tradeoff is they don't retain sun heat too long, but they do absorb a certain amount of water, so if your rain gear isn't up to snuff, you will end up with a wet crotch & butt.

Got a good deal on a Airhawk R. Be testing it all the way out to Salem.

Thanks all.

This just caught my attention in a Rider Magazine ad:

Bill Mayer has evidently been making these since last Fall. Called "Ergo," they aren't cheap.
