Erni clutch replacement

Postby ASLRider » Tue Jan 01, 2013 10:37 pm

Well it's a new year, and my and my wife's New Years resolution is to budget more carefully. In that vein, I am researching some upcoming maintenance/repairs that Erni ('94 r1100rs) will need. One is definitely a new clutch/clutch repair. Let me preface this by saying I know nada about clutches. Well I mean I know how it works in theory, but I've never seen one taken apart or done it myself.

I have to be really careful with my throttle, especially in fifth gear, to avoid slipping the clutch, and I've noticed that this is only getting worse despite my care. I also bet that my commute riding doesn't help, as I often end up in stop and go traffic on route 50 which requires using a lot of clutch control.

I'm guessing that this means I need to replace my clutch plates. A friend at Bobs told me to expect about 1k for this type of repair, but I don't remember if he was talking just new parts or new parts and labor. Looking at Beemer boneyard I see a range of 150-400 for a clutch assembly, but I'm guessing there will be a bunch of little incidental parts that need to be replaced as well.

Beyond just the parts- anyone have insight as to what level of repair this will be? I Clymer-speak: we talking 3 wrenches of 5? Anyone willing to help?

It takes about 6 hours. A bit more the first time. 1K is a fair estimate for parts and labor, if the gearbox does not need to be opened.

BMW recommends replacing the clutch cover and pressure plate along with the friction plate, which leads to the $400 or so in parts. I'd put the work at 4 wrenches first time out - it's not complicated, but it takes a lot of time. If you do it yourself, I have the guide pins (BMW special tool) to help get the transmission back onto the engine. I was able to use a deep socket and a screwdriver to get the friction plate aligned, rather than buy the clutch centering tool.
