Garage Floor Tech

Postby Maria V on Fri Jul 13, 2012 7:52 am

I thought I would toss this out for some ideas.

Our detached garage (approx 20x20) has an asphalt floor (?!?). There is a concrete apron from the outside, over the 'threshold' and about 2 feet into the garage. The rest of the floor is asphalt that is uneven, pitted, and generally crappy. It gets warm enough in the garage that I have had a bicycle kickstand sink into the floor. An ideal floor (to me) is a simple concrete floor. I suppose a truckload of epoxy could be poured into the garage to even the floor as well.

I don't know how deep the asphalt is, and I suspect that it is simple fill underneath it. There are areas that dip 2-3 inches, maybe more. Probably a 5-6 inch difference between the highest and lowest spots. (That epoxy truck is sounding better.)

Short of digging up the asphalt and doing gravel base with rebar, and a concrete pour on top, any suggestions on how to improve this floor?
Thanks for any ideas!

Sounds like you know what has to be done. The right way is never the easy way.

Yep, thanks for confirming. Sooooo, who wants to come over and bust up a garage floor?
Since the right way is also not the inexpensive way, this will go on the home improvement project list.

Sounds like some 1970's shag would fix it. If you can find a dark brown it will hide the oil stains.

I have a new sledgehammer I'm just itchin to use (anger management :P ). Seriously, I'd be willing to help out if needed and it isn't a scheduling conflict.

I don't think you'd need rebar, simply that heavy duty wire unrolled and held inplace while you have the concrete poured. As far as the asphalt goes, you have a small tractor with a bucket, don't you? Just ripping it up with that. Unless you just want to beat the crap out of something, then have at with that sledge hammer. =D>

I believe Dave is right, but there may be alternatives.

This issue can NOT possibly be solved without the mas application of explosives. Frankly, I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Seriously though, count me in for help. I work for food.

Well thanks for the offers of genuine help. :D Jury is out on use of explosives, Andi was briefly speechless when I related it. Will also check on Jim's referral.
Honestly don't foresee this happening this year, but stay in shape and practice your asphalt busting!

Let me see if I can help. For big projects, I often break them in 2 components. So, this summer you could have the club tear out the asphalt; next summer you could install the concrete. I mean you have a GS and all, it should like a dirt floor.............

Seriously, when we poured our new garage last fall, we used the 6-inch wire mesh to reinforce the concrete. Scott

Yep that's what we used in our wash stall for the horses and I think they weigh a tad more than your bike.

Sounds like as suggested dig it out, prepare a good compacted base. pour concrete with rebar, let cure & epoxy the finished floor when ready.

before you pour new concrete let us know, we may have some thing to put under the base & rebar! :D
