Got a Tech Question? Know something about BMWs?

So when I arrived home from work today, there was a CARE package waiting in my garage. When I unwrapped all the brown paper, I found this:

Thanks, Anton! Thanks, John! (BTW - did the scent of Simple Green go with the scene you saw in there?)

The one thing that will keep me riding a BMW is this - the people. BMW makes nice bikes, but so do a lot of other companies, and for a lot less money. Heck, I could buy a brand-new Bandit 1250 with ABS for less than a four-year-old K-GT. But where else will you find people who'd give you the shirt of their back, or the crankshaft out of their garage? (Depending on which you need more! ) And then ride up to deliver it, too?

Stay tuned - Clifford will live again!

It was a perfect day for a ride, and we came the "back" way rather than Beltway, I-95, etc. On the way up we went through Frederick and got onto MD 26, then wound through your neighborhood roads to your house. On the way back we got off MD 26 onto Ridge Rd and angled down to Poolesville and the Ferry. Jill the Garmin voice did not steer us wrong anywhere. (There must be some reason why I even think to mention that. ) We're pleased to play supporting roles in the ongoing Clifford drama. :)

OK, Anton, next questions. I can mic the crankshaft journals, for both connecting rods and main bearings. But do I need to measure the con rod big ends, and the bearing journals in the cases? And if so, how?

You'd measure them with a bore gauge but the conrods are good; no need. Don't bother measuring the case. In fact, if the bearings in the case are OK and the new crank mains mic like the old ones, you might not want to even replace the mains.

Gotcha. Are there choices for the con rod bearings, just like for the mains?

You can't be splitting the cases without a repair manual...

Got my Clymer, which is pretty detailed about things like measuring the connecting rods with a bore gauge. But the shop here at work doesn't have any bore gauges - just not required for the specific work we do. I'm finding errors - like the minimum dimensions for crankshaft journals don't match up between the metric and the English units. And all our mics are in English units. So the subtext here is, "Should I buy some tools?" (Buying tools is never a bad thing!) Plus, I've never done anything quite this precise before. So I'm gonna keep asking questions. Hope you don't mind!

Download the BMW R1100 repair manual from wherever. It has the real dimensions (do your own conversion from metric) and the different bearing choices.

I'm amazed that anyone would attempt this in their garage.

It looks very, very complicated.

Chaz I have the manual, you can borrow it. I also have a rolling mass of spare parts for Clifford for sale. You could even change the color!

Thanks, Conan. I'll take you up on the manual. The color stays, though. After all, it is the energetic and quick-thinking color!
