Mysterious Bolt Appeared and Frightened Me

Postby bdimon » Mon Sep 11, 2017 10:41 pm

Adjusted the valves on my 2005 R1200RT last night. As usual, I put every bolt and fastener in my compartmented tray so I would not misplace any. After the valves were done, I picked up the right rocker cover and saw this inside it.

I do not use the rocker cover as a bolt tray! Where did it come from? I peered inside the head but saw no missing bolts. I put the bike all back together but found no place for this mystery fastener. The bike ran fine on my daily commute. Where could it have come from? I'm worried. :twitching:

It is oily, or dry? If dry, it came from somewhere else on the bike.

Check it against stills on JVB's site to set if it might be one of these fasteners in the cylinder head.

Could be any of the four middle ones, or the one deep inside the head near the cam chain.

It looks to me like the bolts that hold bits on the outside on. Check the cover for the lower stick coil. It may have been left behind and then dropped into the the valve cover, assuming you place it under the head to catch oil drips.

I have the BMW aluminum head protectors on mine, and all it's attachments are bolts like that.

I like your thinking. I'll take another look on the outside. The engine purrs so I guess It's not from the inside.

Sounds like the title to bad grade B Si-Fi film....."Attack of the Misterious Bold That Devoured the World" or "How I learned to Love the Bolt that Frightened Me!"!
