I would like to paint my pannier lids because they are so scratched up. I guess I would have to buy a paint sprayer.

I did the wrap on my GS side panels. It is complicated on them. I doubt it would be easier on your panniers. It is also good for only a couple of years at best. The material fades and deteriorates.

If I find I can do a good job on my bike, maybe I can paint your panniers. The paint is less than $100 if you can find the right color.

The next round of paint prep is done. This round was spot fill and sand, again.







All of the panels ready for cleaning and priming. Then more sanding and clean, then paint.



At this point I have about 100 hours in paint prep, including the frame and engine prep and paint.

Finally almost over this week long cold, and the weather has warmed up some, so I got to setting up the paint booth for this week's paint.






I also glued the outer skin on the right pannier.

2 primer, sand, 3 or 4 black color.

Assembled the paint booth in my garage in prep for painting my project bike tomorrow. Adding the plastic, taping it to the frame and itself, sealed it well, and made the frame stiff.










Still a little more to do.

The two fans, one pushing one pulling, create a small air flow that should help. No worries on the fumes, I have the right gear, and the paint is low VOC.

Some of the parts are done, but not as good as I wanted. I should have practiced on a junk part first, but I didn't. I expect a lot of post paint correction once the paint cures. I still need to finish and paint the tank, and touch up the panniers.

Overall I am OK with the work. The paint has a bit too much orange peal, and a bad first mix means a couple runs. The shine is decent though.











On the subject of the paint booth. It worked pretty well. I should have painted fewer parts at a time as the booth is a little tight. But overall it worked great!

So, today I took a couple of pieces outside to see how they looked in natural light. In a word, terrible. Huge orange peal that would make an orange proud, runs I couldn't see yesterday, and thin spots in the paint on several pieces.

I decided to start over. I sanded all of them down to smooth, which took 5 hours. Then adjusted the paint mix to 8/2/1.

Immediately I could see a dramatic improvement. 3 coats later and they look very good. Far less orange peal, no real runs, a couple small sags, and a great shine.













Now, should I paint my GS side panels? The paint is a very close match to the bike paint color, metal flake and all.

You're having too much fun! I can't wait to see the end result! One of these days I might try to bribe you into helping me paint my sidecar rig. You know I can fake my way around a shop, but a painter I am not.

PS: Of course you should paint your GS side panels. Now that you've got the booth set up, there's probably all sorts of things that would benefit from that color.

Cleaned up the paint and took off the overspray. The paint looks good overall, with a couple runs and a couple small dry spots.









Overall I am pretty happy with the paint. Not pro, but shiny and looks good.
