Not much, just cleaning up the garage and painting a few small parts.

Paint for the half acre of body work is in.

Nice kit, reasonably priced. Time will tell if I can make it look good.

I did a lot of clean-up today, yes that is way better than it was. Then put together a paint boot of sorts to try to minimize the overspray all over the garage. I will next start paint prep on all the 11 bodywork pieces that need paint.

Yeah, it is spindly, but it only needs to hold lightweight plastic sheet, and each leg will be anchored with sandbags.

Did a few more things today. Added the wheels back on:

Installed the foot pegs/boards, shifter, brake pedal and sidestand:

Cleaned up and zip-tied the wiring, plus covered the exposed wires where the covering had disintegrated and fallen off:

Lastly, reassembled the gas cap after painting it.

Got started on the paint prep. Wipe it down with acetone, sand with 200, then 400 grit paper. 3 parts down, 5 to go. Then sand one more time on each part, wipe down again, then prepare to paint.

The plastic parts will require either paint or conditioner, AFTER I paint the body parts.

So, without research at all, I assumed that the CLC panniers were like all other BMW panniers with an inner and outer shell. Wrong, they are not designed to come apart. This would have been good to know before I took out the rivets and screws making everything loose and impossible to reassemble. :emb: The point was to fix the latch and make for a cleaner paint job.

So, with nothing to lose, I decided to see if I could get the two halves apart. I assumed they were glued together since there were no obvious fasteners. I used lots of heat and door wedges to slowly pry the halves apart. And it actually worked. Now I can fix the latch, no replacement parts available, but it just came apart, and then reassemble for paint.

So, despite no one ever doing it before, and posting on the internet that they did, it definitely can be done.

Part of the reason I took the pannier apart is the bad chrome on it. I needed to strip the chrome off so I could paint it. These are not available separately.

It is some thick real chrome over plastic, and a pain to get off.

So no more chrome strip on the paniers?

Correct. I am minimizing the chrome on the bike as much as practical.

A little more progress. I have the trim removed, and the panniers sanded. I also show how to remove the chrome/plastic side trim.

Jim,

The project's coming along nicely!

It vaguely reminds me of when I repainted my 1965(?) Yamaha Twin-Jet 100, changing it from Awful Orange to Beautiful Metallic Blue. It only involved repainting the two fenders and the gas tank (and maybe a couple of side panels). It looked great when finished, but I soon traded it on a 1967(?) Yamaha 180. Heady stuff back then!

I would like to paint my pannier lids because they are so scratched up. I guess I would have to buy a paint sprayer.

I talked with a sport bike rider that planned to apply a wrap or decal-like cover to his CBR fairing. Sounds easier than painting. Do you have experience with these alternatives?
