Does BMWBMW still "maintain" Crest Hill Road

Postby Howard on Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:11 pm

Jane and I went for a Sunday ride, originally intended to trek over the northern third of Skyine Drive, but we decided to shorten the trip a bit and did a cutoff up US 522 to Flint Hill and then back to VA 55 via Crest Hill Road. I seem to remember that our club had undertaken some sort of volunteer role in that we would organize "clean-up crews" to occasionally police Crest Hill Road and pick up trash. It was a very nice ride and we both felt that it was remarkably clean, but I have not heard recently about any effort by our club. Does anyone know what the status is?

Last I remember, John Douglas (the last organizer for that stretch of road/cleanup effort that I remember) was looking for somebody to take over managing that particular project. It's been a while, though.

We gave it up and returned the warning signs and vests to VDOT. It's available for adoption.

Yeah, the club had 2 roads in VA and 1 in MD - we gave up the Crest Hill road and kept the Glad drive area and John and Jody head that road up and I believe Ed & Barb or Rick (RJP) have the MD road.

Bryant and I were just talking about this on Saturday, I think it's a good idea to help with these roads. I hope we are still doing them.

If anybody wants to take the lead for Crest Hill Rd, it's still available.

Do you know what the road in MD is, Tina?

214 in AA County starting at the intersection with 424, it's about a 2 mile stretch heading west. There's a school about half way along the club's stretch where folks have parked in the past to fan out and pick up trash. I think the western edge is Patuxent River Rd, but I could be mistaken about the name of the road.

I remember the east end was at a crossroads with a convenience mart on one corner. The trash across from that convenience mart was unbelievable! I just don't believe people who just toss their trash out the windows of their cars.

As far as I know, the MD collection has also gone into the dump. Don't think anyone wanted to Honcho the project. :?:

It would help if a local in the Anne Arundel area were available to act as crew chief... [-o<

As I recall, the problems with the road cleanups was somewhat equal parts a ringleader and getting people to come out on clean up day. It was like herding sleeping cats to get people out there. Having someone in charge doesn't do much good if they have no one to be in charge of.

It has been quite awhile since a cleanup was done on 214 in Davidsonville. Seems to me we all debated whether to continue well before 2012 and just not sure of the resolution - if any.

I have reached out to some folks to see what I can find out. Stand by, no need for anyone else to scurry around.

the last time I remember talking about the roads was at the meeting in Hancock - we voted to turn in the road on Crest Hill and keep Glades (name?) drive that John and Jody would head up and Ed and Barb agreed to take over the MD road I know Rick (RJP) and James were the last to be in charge of the MD road. That was the last time I remember talking about it.
