Recommendation for summer gloves?

Postby pbharvey on Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:47 am

I wear Held Steve's for the vast majority of my riding. I have a pair of Held Air mesh gloves for really hot days but they're pretty much worn out. I like the idea of a gauntlet glove over the shortie and am looking at the Held Agadir or Hero. Anyone have either of these two and care to chime in? I'd like to find something as close to a cooler version of the Held Steve as possible.

Perhaps asking Held is the way to go? =D>

Brian - I think I would try them on and see which ones fit the best. I have the airglide? pair from Held and LOVE THEM! So that said, I would probably like the middle pair because of the adjustable strap.

One thing to keep in mind is the size. Since you're buying summer gloves, keep in mind that your hand swells in the heat. I bought mine and wore them in the store and they fit perfect, so now when it gets too hot out, they are a little hard to get on and off. I should have went a 1/2 size bigger. Lesson learned.

Good luck! Keep us posted on which ones you get and what you think of them.

The Held Air Heroes are hands-down the most comfortable gloves I've ever worn. Kept me comfortable from 40-110 degrees. Unfortunately, they fell apart in a month's hard riding (7,000 miles, give or take). It's a shame too, 'cause I really loved them.

Similar experience here. I have been an advocate of Held gloves for almost 20 years. Have had great service life for all but the last pair -- Held Fresh (shortie made of mesh and leather). I think the Air Hero was the replacement for the Fresh. The Fresh was fine the first summer of riding, then the leather :!: started to delaminate and generally fall apart the second summer. Held carries a 12 month warranty, and the dealer I bought them from stopped carrying Helds. But that was one pair of gloves from 4 pairs of Helds I have owned, two of which are still quite serviceable. I don't know whether I was an outlier with my experience with the Fresh gloves, or if Held is sourcing lower-priced materials from Asia. The Fresh were not very expensive (for Held) and I haven't heard of others with this problem, so YMMV. Currently I usually wear deerskin gloves in most all weather other than rain. If I were to opt for vented gloves, I think I might look at what BMW has simply due to their 2-year guarantee on clothing. Best of luck, Scott

+1

I rode to Colorado and back and then to Missouri and back over the last month in a pair of Lee Parks DeerTours. My hands were never uncomfortable (and we all know how hot it's been). Talking with Lee's folk out at the MOA Rally, it seems they feel that mesh/perforated gloves are not only less protective but also have a limited temperature range: Anything over 98.6f and they're too hot; anything under about 70f and they're too cold.

I carry a pair of BMW Summer GoreTex gloves for wet weather, but, luckily, never had to wear them on those two trips.

I've been wearing the Hero gloves for the past two summers. They're great...but unfortunately I don't get the benefit of the breeziness because of the faring on my bike. They do breath really well though. I very rarely have sweaty hands even on the hottest of days. Like most Held gloves, the palm is just the right thickness to allow for good feel of the controls. Nothing worse than gloves with a thick palm and you can feel the ridges on your grips...

I love these Tour Master deerskins, but they seem to be unobtanium right now.

I love my Lee Parks Deerskin gloves. I got the ones with the added liner that does something fuddy duddy when it gets cold or warm. I am comfortable in them as high as 110 deg and as low as 10 deg. I can't speak for any lower or higher as I haven't experienced those temperatures yet. I've had mine now for about 18 months. only drawback is if they get wet your hands turn orange. I like the gauntlet, especially in the cold, but I like the added protection in the summer. It seems people are much more road-ragey during the summer months. They are also good for trimming rose bushes

In my search for gloves, I started looking in the winter when my hands were unbearably cold/numb. I bought three sets. The first I returned, the second was the BMW gloves the sales person at BOBs said he liked using them for skiing, they are waterproof, but the tips of my fingers go numb and painful in the cold. Then I got these gloves at the International Motorcycle Show year before last. As back ups I carry a leather pair of gloves I got at Costco.
