screen names in member directory

Got a Question for the BMWBMW Board of Directors and/or Volunteers?

screen names in member directory

Postby Firebird » Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:18 am

Can or would it be possible to put our screen names in the member directory? That is if folks want them listed in the directory. I ask this because from my perspective, I know some of you from your call names, not your given names. If someone had to look up a member in the directory, it might be easier to look them up by their call names.

Thanks.

This was discussed at the January BOD meeting. While a good idea, it wont make it into this years directory. The logistics and short time frame make it impossible.

It would have to be a voluntary opt-in thing anyhow, and the vast majority of the club members either do not visit the forum, are not on it at all, or are not members, but are on the Forum.

OK. That's why I qualified it with the, "that is if folks want them listed in the directory" comment. I also understand the tightness of the directory and the number of people on the boards and what not. Of course it would be if members opt-in for that listing. I know there are loads of members who don't post on the boards or just visit, but if they, paid club member, have gone through the trouble to create a screen name, then the opt-in / opt-out is there.

On the member sign up form, could we add that option, like the MOA directory does? That way the club might get an idea of if it's a good idea or not and not have just a few people deciding if something should or shouldn't be included based on the fact of who is on the forums or not. The option of having contact information listed in the membership directory should be there also.

Correct me if I am wrong but are the "few people" you are referring to the club officers who are elected to make these decisions? I am not trying to be a smart a$$ but it would be up to the BoD to discuss this and determine if it is feasible and worthwhile.

Sure. The question came to me after reading the thread about DogHouse being visited in the hospital and people not knowing his last name. Also after thinking about it, should people be able to opt-out of having their address published in the membership directory if they wanted to? I know when you renew or even join MOA, you have that option of having your contact information published in the member directory. I know about a dozen folks real name with screen name here and that's from going to the meetings, meals, holiday party, working with a few through MSF and tech days. I'm glad that I sat through my first BOD meeting so that I could see how things were voted on and the such.

The more I can understand how this club is run, the more informed I am and if I want to stay with this club or not. Sometimes, you have to question those who run the party to make sure things are fair and on the up and up. People have a habit of developing clicks focusing on their own issues and not the whole whether you get along with a certain person or not. I'm just saying and I just made an observation about the member directory. I didn't know that the screen name issue being in the membership directory was discussed. Had I known that and why, then I wouldn't have brought my question up because it would have been asked and answered.

I think the MOA "directory" you are talking about is the "Anonymous Book" not a membership directory - which isn't the same as our membership directory. At least, I think that's the case.

Yeah. OK. Thanks for the clarification. I thought the Anonymous Book was a membership directory. :) You can be listed in the Anonymous Book without joining MOA? I have to check it out.

What if someone changes their screename in the middle of the year, I.e Darnestowner? Reprint a whole new directory?

Once you start going to more club events, you will notice the same certain people time and again. Not everyone listed in the membership has a screename or even participates on the forum to the extent of say us, 30-40? do. You'll get to know names easy enough.

I didn't know you could change your screen name. I've always came across the once you chose a screen name, it couldn't be changed. I still say that Darnestowner should have kept his screen name. I thought it was cool and it was easy to remember, and especially to say when introduced. :D

If you changed your screen name, then make it known and people can make the correction in their directory, if they wanted to. Anyway, once I know who you are in real life, I'll write your screen name in my directory, so that I know who you are. BTW, what is your real name Blaster? :?: :D

That's what most people call me in public, now behind my back, who knows :) My personal friends from here with whom I relate to on a daily basis off the forum, use my real name, as would most I would assume.

Who didn't know Rick's last name?? Most people would have just asked for the room extension. I knew his last name, I was making some fun with that little operator dialogue. This forum too suffered a writers strike, I was trying to fill in when I could :)

LOL. I have to admit that I didn't know Rick's last name. I didn't even know his name until someone said it in the posting. For that matter, I can't remember if I even met Rick. If I did, then it was at the holiday party for about a hot minute. I need to start taking Ginko.

As for the forum writer's strike, well the Writer's Strike is over. Now, I and other actors and people working in the entertainment industry that I know, can get back to work.

Don't think so. But there are members who are NOT in the Anonymous Book.
